The Lord of the Rings trilogy has gained steadily in popularity since Fellowship of the Ring came out in
theatres, in December of 2001. That first film spurred many of its viewers who hadn't read the books to do
so, myself included (thank you Jeff for making me sit through 3 hours, and then for buying me the book). Now,
I find myself waiting, far from patiently, for the extended edition of Return of the King. In my opinion, the
series still isn't finished, because we all know there's going to be more stuff in there that there was in the
3 1/2 hour theatrical version, which rocked face by the way. My need for resolution is fueled by my recent
acquisition of the extended version of The Two Towers (thanks Mom). I also demand that The Hobbit be made into
a movie, and soon, and that it have Ian Holm and Ian McKellen in their respective roles. Otherwise, Peter Jackson
is toast.
For those of you who don't know, Lord of the Rings is the story of how Frodo
Baggins, a hobbit from the Shire, must destroy the Ring of Power for the good
of all Middle Earth. Helping him along the way is Gandalf the wizard (Ian McKellen),
Gimli the dwarf (John Reys-Davies), Legolas the elf (how 'bout some Orlando
Bloom!), a ranger out of the North named Aragorn (he is Viggo! (Mortensen) You
are like the buzzing of flies to him!), and 3 more hobbits named Merry (Dominic
Monaghan), Pippin (Billy Boyd, my personal favorite character. Lovely singing
voice), and Sam, Frodo's gardener (Sean Astin). Also making an appearance in the
first film is Boromir of Gondor (Sean Bean). Liv Tyler is in there also, as
an elf maiden named Arwen.
For any deprived individual who hasnt been introduced to Lord of the Rings, what
are you waiting for? The series is very entertaining, exciting, and it certainly
has its amusing parts. So, rent the movies, in their extended versions preferably,
and enjoy. Despite his random changing of certain things, specifically in Two Towers,
Peter Jackson did a marvelous job of keeping with the books.
